Sheath Design and Construction

One of my durable handmade sheaths is included with each of my hunting knives and fillet knives.

Here are the features of my standard leather sheath:

  • Crafted from durable 8-9 oz. vegetable tanned carving leather
  • Pouch-type construction, covering over half the knife’s handle
  • machine stitched
  • Wet formed to the knife for a snug fit
  • Finishing dip in neatsfoot oil for enhanced water resistance

If you would like extra stamping on your sheath (such as basket weave or other geometric stamping) I offer this at an additional cost.

I also offer a custom sheath making service. Although the standard sheath that I provide with each of my hunting and fillet knives is generally the simple pouch type sheath, I can, upon request, custom make a sheath in any of a number of styles. Contact me and we can discuss both your ideas and mine, and I’ll be happy to give you a free quote.

I normally prefer to have the knife in my shop while designing and making its sheath, but I may also be able to work from an accurate tracing of the knife if necessary.

To see and read about more of the different kinds of custom sheath work that I do, go to my sheath gallery.

You can now learn how to make your own simple leather sheath following many of the steps that we use in our own shop. I have put together a Make a Sheath Tutorial going into plenty of detail and including lots of photos.
